- Like S. grandiflorus, but stems thicker and shorter. Stems pendant, 20-40 cm long, 2-3 cm diameter. Ribs ±10. Central spines 17-21, white. Periferal spines 15-17, and 1-4 bristles. Flower 18-22 cm long. Ovary and receptacle with whitish spines and hairs. Fruit almost globose, red-purple, spiny. Self-fertile.
